Wau Bulan - World of Wearable Art

With  this project, I was asked to help bring to life a vision for the World of Wearable Art  -design competition that takes place in Wellington, New Zealand every year. The design was created by my friend, Faris Fairusham, and he requested my help with the painting on the piece, as well as finishing detail work on both the wings and skirt. I was also in charge of the photography and videography of the submission. I’m happy to add that as of September 2025, Wau Bulan has been named the winner of the Air Section of the year’s World of Wearable art competition.

The inspiration for Wau Bulan comes from a traditional Malaysian kite, which gives the design its  signature  shape. The structure of the wings and skirt is made of rattan, making it flexible and light. The wings have also been designed to sway as the model moves, tying the design back to the theme of “air”

This project has been an amazing opportunity to showcase traditional Malaysian culture on a world stage, and I am incredibly proud to have been a part of the garment’s construction and detailing process.
